The 2015 PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols) protocol guided the creation of the search, selection, and data synthesis processes. The databases PubMed, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, and Scopus will be searched electronically.

The public's adoption of mobile instant messaging (IM) apps, like WhatsApp and WeChat, is substantial, and these apps' interactive nature surpasses SMS text messaging, ultimately assisting in changing unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Understanding how instant messaging applications can be used to promote health, particularly for alcohol reduction among university students, is currently lacking.
This study seeks to investigate the perspectives of university student drinkers in Hong Kong regarding the use of instant messaging applications for alcohol reduction, given their significant exposure to alcohol (such as peer drinking invitations and campus alcohol promotions), and the prevalence of IM app usage.
A qualitative study focused on 20 Hong Kong Chinese university students (current drinkers) who achieved Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test scores of 8, selected using a purposive sampling approach. From September to October 2019, semistructured individual interviews were carried out. Interview questions probed drinking habits, past attempts to quit, views on using instant messaging apps for intervention, the perceived efficacy of IM apps in lowering alcohol consumption, and opinions about the content and design of these apps. In each interview, roughly one hour was spent. Every interview was audio-recorded and meticulously transcribed, preserving the exact wording. Independent thematic analysis of the transcripts was performed by two researchers, with a third investigator confirming coding consistency.
Participants deemed instant messaging applications as a reasonable and appropriate avenue for alcohol consumption reduction programs. Though social comparison processes (specifically, self-evaluations relative to peers) often motivate physical activity in digital spaces, the user preferences and reactions to these comparative data points are surprisingly unclear.
Our iterative process facilitated a richer understanding of how users choose comparison targets, their engagement with these targets, and their reactions to them.
Three research studies, each involving different student populations with insufficient physical activity, utilized the Fitbit system (Fitbit LLC) and a unique, adaptive online platform for daily step tracking for seven to nine days (N=112). Each study utilized a uniquely designed layout within the adaptive platform; participants could select a preferred comparison subject from a diverse range of options, scrutinize the specific amount of information about their chosen comparison target, and assess their physical activity motivation levels prior to and after reviewing the information. Utilizing the Fitbit system, daily physical activity targets were designed to be at varying levels, some higher and some lower than the user's personal activity. Examining comparison target selection methods, the time spent observing, and the count of items viewed per target category, we also explored the connection between these comparisons and daily physical activity outcomes (motivation and behavior).
Study 1 (sample size 5) showed that the new web platform operated according to design specifications. The participants' engagement with the platform, including the specific target selected, time spent reviewing a selected profile, and quantity of profile elements viewed, varied noticeably across each day.
